You must read this article about the impact of music on personal development. Maybe it does make you 'smarter' if we can define what they really means. I like the way the author has listed how his personal qualities improved and how he 'performed' better academically because of his ability to persevere with music. At the same time I agree totally that is it 'passion' for something (music or other) that is the key here.
